As with most sex work, webcamming doesn’t hold the best reputation. It’s often considered exploitation or a last-resort hustle to settle debt, but Reed Amber, 26, explains how webcam models are just your average self-employed freelancers sticking with the same volume of agency and independence anyone else.
Model, producer and co-creator of YouTube channel ComeCurious, Reed is basically the physical embodiment of sex positivity, which she defines as “trying to generate people feel like what they’re doing along with what they’re into isn’t wrong, it’s normal and it’s absolutely fine.” She’s a huge advocate for removing stigma and taboos around sex, and we swept up together with her to explore webcamming, a distinct sex work which is seldom discussed.
Exactly why do you think that some men, and possibly women at the same time, prefer it to porn?
“There’s so much free porn that I feel webcamming is a lot more of your personal one-on-one. You are able to go online and find any ol’ stuff, but webcamming is a bit more personal; it’s tailored exactly as to what you would like as well as what you’re trying to find. You’re not sharing it with 100 thousand other individuals. This is your show. Quite often you raise your relationship, I talk with you like a friend and that i respect you being a person. ‘How has your mood been, what have you get from the shops, exactly what are you cooking for dinner…’ it’s just like an online relationship”
…So it’s a lot like the ‘girlfriend experience’?
“Yes, it’s very much like the girlfriend experience. But that also is determined by just what the webcam model is a lot like plus what are the person paying is like because we all want something different.”
Have you ever had say no to a request?
“I’m definitely one in the cam girls who rarely decline. I’ve always wanted to try a new challenge, but that’s not because I felt like I had to. It’s just personally things i wish to accomplish. I would like to tick stuff off my list, I want to it is able to once particularly if it comes to sex positivity. Even though it’s something I’m definitely not into, I’d still have a go. Easily didn’t as it, I’d resemble ‘sorry, I’m not necessarily into that.’ But there’s many people that might avoid a lot of stuff.”
What are the really common requests you will get?
“It depends on the profile that you simply build because once you come up with a profile, you write somewhat bio of you, and look over could possibly be viewed as a a bit more ‘out there’. I’m offered to anything, like roleplay, so most of the time I buy roleplay requests, more simply because I’ve found them fun no matter how unusual or bizarre they’re. What excites me are uncommon and unusual requests that you just wouldn’t really come across. Life’s too boring otherwise”
Site to react once you tell them the things you do?
“I have a mix of emotions. Mostly people react positively due to the way I talk about it. It’s so different if you’re really shy and timid and quiet about it. It immediately gives off this idea of ‘oh they’re not completely comfortable with it.’
Basically you get to be your sex-positive self to your full potential…
“Exactly! That’s where I received my first taste of sex positivity. Dealing with my relationships and going to university I was like ‘woah, nobody thinks generate an income do, I must be weird’. Being a webcam model, I realised most people are into something different, they simply seem like they can’t discuss it.”
