Every hairstylist can recall the moment they became attracted to hair and also the desire for creativity it inspires. The storyline was not different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her adoration for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. The start: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted at the age of 19. Her first duty station was in Okinawa, Japan, then an area operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s in time Korea, a barber would check out the site and provide haircuts towards the Marines. However, this happened: “I is at a tent doing my personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I definitely do shape ups and line ups for me personally, nothing too crazy, when I a Marine Sergeant approach me and get me for the haircut. I had never cut anybody’s hair before however i jumped right into it and that he finished up loving it…and along with his outreach and leadership, literally the next day, I’d 13 Marines aligned for me.”
This is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering being a future career-she chose charging $5 a haircut understanding that was it. Which has a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair in the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and every time you service a client, there’s impact.
The effect of the Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance are in an all-time high. The uniform needs to be squared away and ironed. Everything must be flush, measured properly-there’s a great deal of awareness of detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was taking a look at Marines from head to toe. It tore up me because we’re the best people with this nation and that we should be travelling therefore. That’s the location where the impact produce and heart came from, i thought about being in a position to transmit that through my hands to folks around me…and keep these things walk around feeling proud and good from head to toe, and representing this nation therefore.”
Similarities Operating: Military & Barbering
After coming back from service, Kristyl asked herself what the next challenge and chapter in her life can be. That’s when she made a decision to pursue her education as being a barber at Bellus Academy.
